Unsplash API Setup Guide: Artistic Photography Integration for SPS Pro

Integrating Unsplash with Super Programmatic SEO Pro gives your automated content engine direct access to one of the internet’s most curated libraries of artistic, high-resolution lifestyle and urban photography. Generating your developer credentials is free and takes less than two minutes.

Step 1: Accept the Unsplash Developer Guidelines

To generate an API key, you must first create a free account at unsplash.com/developers and click New Application. Before reaching the application form, Unsplash requires you to accept their developer terms by completing two quick steps:

1. Check the Four Mandatory Guideline Boxes

At the top of the agreement screen, check all four boxes confirming you understand the core rules:

  • Authentic Use: You confirm the API will be used for genuine content creation projects.
  • No Replication: You agree not to build an application that replicates Unsplash’s core service (such as a standalone wallpaper app or unofficial desktop client).
  • Security: You agree to keep your Access Key and Secret Key strictly confidential.
  • Rate Limiting: You agree to respect the API request thresholds and not abuse the servers with excessive, rapid calls.

2. Accept the Terms

Scroll to the bottom of the guidelines and click the Accept terms button, which will automatically become active once all four boxes are checked.

Step 2: Create Your Application & Copy Your Key

As soon as you accept the terms, you will be directed to the final application setup form:

  1. Application Name: Enter a clean title for your workflow or website (e.g., SPS Pro Content Engine or your site name).
  2. Description: Write a brief explanation describing how you intend to use the media (e.g., Automated featured image assignment for WordPress educational blog posts).
  3. Click the Create application button.
  4. Scroll down to the Keys section on your new application dashboard.
  5. Copy your Access Key to your clipboard. (Note: You only need the Access Key; SPS Pro does not require the Secret Key).

Step 3: Connect Unsplash to SPS Pro

  1. Log into your WordPress Dashboard and navigate to Super Programmatic SEOAPI Images.
  2. Locate the 🌄 Unsplash provider card.
  3. Paste your newly copied Access Key into the secure input field. (SPS Pro automatically applies AES-256 encryption to your key before saving it to the database, displaying only the last 4 characters for security).
  4. Check the box labeled Enable this provider.
  5. Click the 🔌 Test Connection button. When the credentials validate, the status badge at the top right of the card will light up solid green (● Active).

Managing Rate Limits: Demo vs. Production Mode

By default, every new Unsplash API key starts in Demo Mode, which provides a limit of 50 requests per hour. For standard daily publishing or small test campaigns, this default limit is more than enough.

If you are executing massive bulk campaigns and need to scale beyond 50 images per hour, you can request a free upgrade:

  • Go back to your application page in the Unsplash Developer Portal.
  • Click the Apply for Production button.
  • Once Unsplash reviews and approves your application, your hourly limit will automatically increase to 5,000 requests per hour free of charge.

🎲 Pro-Tip: Configure Your Anti-Repetition Offset

Because Unsplash is highly popular for artistic and aesthetic photography, basic search queries can easily return identical popular images across different websites.

To ensure your programmatic pages maintain a unique visual identity, scroll down to the Anti-Repetition Offset section on the API Images page. Set your Min Offset to 3 and your Max Offset to 12. This instructs the SPS engine to bypass the most frequently downloaded top photos and randomly select fresh, visually distinct media from deeper within Unsplash’s search results for every generated article.
